Sedona’s multilayer Automatic Restoration App allows operators to keep much tighter safety margins for handling network failures while saving more than half of their core CapEx.
Most IP/MPLS networks today rely on the IP/MPLS layer to protect services against failures using resiliency schemes like IGP convergence and Fast Reroute. This makes sense for router-related failures. However, for optical failures, such as fiber cuts, this approach is very inefficient. It requires vast over-provisioning of resources to allow traffic impacted by an optical failure to find sufficient capacity in circumventing IP links.
A much more efficient approach is to use optical restoration for such failures. This approach can save over 50% of the core ports in an IP/MPLS network.
Photonic restoration is, howerver, rather slow. It might also worsen the impact on traffic beyond the original failure if used without consideration of the IP/MPLS layer and its changing needs.
Sedona’s patent-pending multilayer solution ensures that optical restoration restores the bulk of the traffic as quickly as possible without adverse impact on traffic, and over restoration paths that are still usable by the IP/MPLS layer (for example, without excessive latency).
We take a holistic approach to restoration. It allows us to efficiently deal with failures that involve the IP/MPLS layer and cannot be dealt with using optical restoration alone. In addition, our solution manages the reversion process after the failure has been fixed to ensure no traffic is hit during this process.
